If you are not sure about the activities to enhance your child's fine motor skills then you are at the right place. Here we are going to provide a list of activities that will help you to develop the fine motor skills of your child with household and easily available items.
What are fine motor skills?
The skills which strengthen small muscles of the hands which can further help in the writing skills of the child and holding things are called fine motor skills. It is also called pincer grasp or finger dexterity. Here are some simple yet effective household items or activities that help in the fine motor skills of the child.
Note: adult supervision is mandatory
1. Dough (food)
👉 let the child pinch and roll and make things they want. It enhances the creativity of your child. We are assuring you that the results will be amazing. It might be messy for you but the outcome will help you a lot in terms of child development.
2. Empty Tablet packet (Blister pack)
We never think that the empty tablet packet can be used for a child's fine motor skills. Let them pull the wrapper and spend some time with it. It will helpful for the development of finger movement, muscle strength, and grip.
Just make sure the blister pack is neat and clean before giving it to the child.
3. Newspaper/paper
We generally have a stack of older newspapers that we either throw away or use while cleaning. You can give the same to your child and let them tear it, You will be surprised by their actions and joy. It eliminates the boredom of your child and satisfies children's curiosity. It helps in developing hand-eye and bilateral coordination.

4. household chores
We can identify a couple of household items like bowls, spoons, and other utensils and ask children to clean them with a cloth or mop. They also enjoy arranging them on their own. It gives them the feeling of self-worth and independence. This activity enhances muscle strength and makes them more engaged with household stuff.
5. Eat by themselves
Eating themselves encourages confidence as well as they would enjoy the food. Let them be messy and explore sensory textures and it is also good for fine motor skills. Gradually your child will start to eat by him/herself.
6. Play music with kitchen utensils
This activity may lead the headache for parents but sometimes it's good to let children do whatever they would like to do. We can share a couple of spoons, bowls, or kitchen items that make a sound if we tap them together. it will give them a good amount of enjoyment as well as they learn cause and effect.
7. Beans sorting activity in bowls
Give them different types of beans for example kidney beans and black eye peas and let them sort them in different bowls. It helps your child to develop cognitive and fine motor skills.
This activity should be under supervision only to make sure your child doesn't put the beans into the mouth or nose. It can be dangerous for them.
8. Scooping with a spoon or ladder
Give solid material (i.e., rice or wheat or suji) and bowls and a spoon or ladder, and let the child scoop. It works best for finger dexterity and strengthens your child's grip.
9. Pouring from a cup or any utensils with a handle
Let the child pour any liquid or any solid materials from the cup or any utensils which have handles. This activity enhances your child's patience, concentration power, and stability of the body.
10. Pulling cotton or shape-making activity
Give some of the cotton in any container and let the child pull it from there. You can ask them to make some shapes from it. This will help your child to develop decision capabilities and build self-confidence.
11. Lock and key activity
Children will love to lock/unlock on their own, Just give them a lock and a couple of keys. Let them open the lock with the correct key which is the best fine motor activity for your child. It also enhances logical thinking capabilities.
12. Zip open & close activity
Zipper activity gives your child a good amount of benefits in terms of finger strengthening and fine motor skills. Give them a cloth/bag containing a zip or zipper shown in the below image, and let them zip/unzip it with his/her fingers. You will wonder how much time has passed.
13. Button Press Activity (snap buttons)
This activity increases the concentration and patience of your child. Give your child any bag or cover having press buttons so when the child opens and closes, it requires more energy and more focus and works well on pincer grasp.
14. Poke toothpick/matchstick/any stick and insert beads/fryums
Give your child any toothpicks, matchsticks, or any sticks, and let them poke in the dough and insert fryums/pasta/beads into the sticks. It will help them with concentration, attention span, patience, and fine motor skills.
15. Diy toys
Make any DIY toys that work on their fine motor activities like popsicle jars, pooling threads, pulling clothes from a box, or inserting earbuds in holes containing jars.
